You do not have to be a doctor to work in the medical field. Jobs in the medical field are many and varied. One of these jobs is medical coding. As a medical coding specialist, you can work in hospitals, surgery centers, home health care facilities, consulting firms, insurance offices, dental facilities, coding and billing services and other long term care facilities.
A medical coder’s work is to read and review medical documents so as to come up with a detailed outline about a patient’s disease, injuries and other medical procedures. The medial coder then uses a universal coding system to assign codes for diagnosis and other medical procedure. This is the information that is used to prepare reports which the health facility or organization administration uses to plan and manage various activities within the institution.
Students wishing to pursue this career should take courses such as biology, algebra, computer technology, data processing, office procedure courses, English as well as typing. A person with an associate degree in medical coding is at a better position of getting a job than one without. The associate degree course usually takes two years to complete.
Medical coding is a career that offers quite a good salary; this is because there is a shortage of medical coders in the various health facilities. A properly certified medical coder earns more than 46,000 dollars annually. Non credentialed coders earn around $36,000. On average, most professional coders take home between 39,000 and 47,000 dollars per year. Only 37 percent of medical coders work in hospitals. The rest of the code specialists find employment in private organizations. The future of the medical coding career looks bright with the need of coders increasing with each passing day.
